With so many specialties available, it is easy to feel that every health concern needs a specialist. In practice, most everyday problems are best handled by a general physician first. A general physician looks at you as a whole person rather than one organ, sorts out what is likely to be going on, and, when a specialist is needed, points you to the right one.

Everyday illnesses

Fever, cough, cold, sore throat, body aches, stomach upsets and other common infections are the classic reasons to see a general physician. Most settle with simple treatment and rest, and the physician can tell you what to watch for and when to come back if things do not improve.

A new symptom you cannot explain

Unusual tiredness, unexplained weight change, persistent headaches, dizziness, indigestion that keeps returning, or any symptom that is new and has lasted longer than you would expect. You do not have to know what it means before you come. Working that out is exactly what the consultation is for.

Ongoing conditions that need a regular review

Diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems and similar long-term conditions do best with regular follow-up. A general physician reviews your readings and reports, adjusts your care when needed, and keeps an eye on the bigger picture, including the effect of one condition on another.

A general check of your health

If you simply want to know where you stand, a general physician is the right person to start with. A routine evaluation covers the basics, establishes your baseline and picks up anything that needs a closer look.

When specialist care may be needed

There are situations where a specialist is the better next step: when symptoms clearly point to one organ or system, when a condition needs specialised tests or a procedure, when a problem continues despite initial treatment, or when your physician feels a specialist opinion would help. In each case, the general physician's role is to guide you to the right specialist with a clear summary of what has already been found, so that you do not have to start from the beginning.

This is one of the advantages of a general physician within a multi-speciality hospital. At Aditya Kamaraja Hospitals, General Medicine consultations are available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, with walk-ins welcome, and the hospital's other departments are in the same building when a referral is needed.

When not to wait for a consultation

Some situations should not wait for a routine appointment. Chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden weakness or numbness, confusion, a severe injury or heavy bleeding need emergency care straight away. AKH does not run a 24-hour emergency service, so in an emergency please go to the nearest emergency service without delay.

In short

When you are unwell, unsure, or simply due a check, a general physician is a sensible first call. You get a considered view of the whole picture, practical guidance you can follow, and, if you need one, a direct path to the right specialist.
