Recognising the signs

When sleep becomes a health concern

An occasional bad night is normal. When any of these becomes a pattern, it is worth a conversation with a doctor.

  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Frequent waking or poor-quality sleep
  • Snoring
  • Suspected sleep apnea
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Sleep affecting mood, concentration or daily functioning

Our approach to sleep care

Sleep problems rarely have a single cause

Breathing, weight, blood pressure, stress, medicines, habits and the mind can each play a part, and often more than one is involved. That is why we do not treat sleep in isolation. Your concern is looked at through appropriate medical evaluation and sleep assessment, and the care that follows is personalised to what we find, not to a standard package.

Appropriate medical evaluation

A pulmonologist and sleep physician, with the wider hospital team available when another specialty is needed.

Sleep assessment

Your history, symptoms and sleep pattern are assessed to understand what is disturbing your sleep.

Personalised care

A plan built around you, with the same team following it up.

Conditions we help with

What we see most often

Insomnia

Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or waking unrefreshed. We look at the medical, lifestyle and emotional factors that may be behind it before suggesting a plan.

Sleep apnea

Pauses in breathing during sleep, often noticed by a partner as loud snoring or gasping, and felt as tiredness through the day. Evaluation by our pulmonologist and sleep physician helps establish whether sleep apnea is present and how it should be managed.

Snoring and sleep-related breathing problems

Snoring is common, but persistent snoring can be a sign that breathing is disturbed during sleep. A medical evaluation tells you whether it needs attention.

Sleep and mental wellbeing

Poor sleep and low mood, anxiety or stress often feed each other. We consider both together rather than treating one and ignoring the other.

Other sleep-related concerns

Irregular sleep timing, sleep difficulty from shift work, restless sleep, or a concern you cannot quite name. If sleep is affecting your day, it is worth a conversation.
