Robotic Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens that gradually makes vision hazy, dulls colours and increases glare. Cataract surgery replaces the cloudy lens with a clear artificial lens. At AKH it is performed as a modern, small-incision procedure with a choice of lens options, and robotic technology supports the surgeon during the procedure.

Why an evaluation matters

Cloudy or misty vision, glare from headlights, fading colours and spectacles that no longer help are common signs of cataract, but they can also point to other eye conditions. SMILE Pro (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a flapless, keyhole form of laser vision correction. A laser shapes a thin lenticule of tissue inside the cornea, which is removed through a small incision to correct short-sightedness, with or without astigmatism, so that the eye focuses without relying on spectacles or contact lenses.

SMILE Pro may be considered for adults with short-sightedness, with or without astigmatism, whose spectacle power has been stable. Vision correction

LASIK / Femto LASIK

LASIK is an established form of laser vision correction. A thin flap is created on the surface of the cornea, a laser reshapes the tissue beneath it to correct the eye's focusing power, and the flap is placed back. In femto LASIK, the flap is created with a femtosecond laser rather than a blade. Both are ways of reducing dependence on spectacles and contact lenses.

LASIK and femto LASIK may be considered for adults whose spectacle power has been stable and whose corneas are healthy, for short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism. A thorough suitability assessment tells you whether it is safe for your eyes, and your ophthalmologist will tell you plainly if it is not.

Eye care questions

Before your eye visit

The practical answers that otherwise become phone calls to the front desk.

Do I need an appointment for an eye check-up?

No. Walk-ins are welcome during consultation hours, 10 am to 1 pm and 6 to 9 pm, all days except Tuesday. Booking ahead simply shortens your wait.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Your current spectacles or contact lenses, any previous eye reports or prescriptions, your list of regular medicines, and your sugar and blood pressure readings if you have them. Photo ID and insurance card if you plan to use insurance.

Will my eyes be dilated? Can I drive home?

For a comprehensive check-up, diabetic screening or retina examination we usually put dilating drops, which blur near vision for three to four hours. Please bring someone to drive you, or plan to use an auto or cab.

How often should a person with diabetes have an eye examination?

At least once a year, even if your vision feels normal. Diabetic retinopathy develops silently and is far easier to treat when it is caught early.

Is cataract surgery a day procedure?

Yes. Modern small-incision cataract surgery takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and most patients go home the same day. We discuss lens options with you beforehand so you know exactly what to expect.

Am I suitable for LASIK?

LASIK and femto LASIK suit adults over 18 whose spectacle power has been stable for at least a year and whose corneas are healthy. A detailed pre-LASIK assessment tells us whether it is safe for you, and we will tell you plainly if it is not.

At what age should a child have an eye test?

Every child should have one before starting school, and earlier if you notice squinting, sitting very close to the TV, frequent headaches or one eye drifting. Children rarely complain about blurry vision; they simply adapt to it.

Can I get spectacles made here?

Yes. Our in-house optical section makes spectacles to your fresh prescription in the same building, so you do not have to go elsewhere with the paper.
